Former Packers quarterback to help raise funds for Iowa vets

Giving back is always something that we hear preached to us from a young age. Even colleges want you to give back even when you still owe them tens of thousands of dollars. However, in most every situation giving back not only makes you feel good, but it also benefits people in ways you can’t imagine. Enter former Green Bay Packers quarterback Lynn Dickey and the Des Moines Radio Group.

Dickey has found that giving back to organizations that are providing much needed help to people who are in desperate need of it is not only great, but necessary.

“It is really important,” Dickey said, “we (former players) know that money is being raised and we know how important it is”.

Dickey recently was in a charity classic that supported women battling breast cancer and had a great deal to say about how it helped those women with their day-to-day expenses.

“Those women were amazing,” Dickey said, “a great deal of them had kids and had to decide whether to buy food for them or their prescriptions and almost all of them would rather see their kids get fed then think about themselves”.

Dickey sees an undisputable connection between the women fighting breast cancer and the veteran men and women coming back from overseas.

“The things that come up for these veterans may not be life-depending in the moment but a lot of them are in dire need,” Dickey said.

Dickey will join a group of 14 former players that include super bowl winners and Hall of Famers from previous decades. Some of the players include:  Dave Robinson, Jan Stenerud, Marv Fleming and Frank Winters. These players will join local businesses to raise money for the American Legion.

The American Legion is a community-service organization that was formed in 1919 to assist veterans in their times of need. The American Legion has partnered with KIOA and 1350 ESPN to put on the Vets of Valor Celebrity Charity Classic to raise money for their veterans assistance fund. The goal of this fund is to help veterans who are in need of assistance with regular day-to-day activities or in need of financial help.

This new event is one of five events that the Des Moines Radio Group is putting on to help the American Legion. Over the past two years the radio group has raised $80,000 that has been donated to the American Legion and this year the goal is to raise $100,000.

The event that is being put on by 93.3 KIOA and 1350 ESPN will take place August 24-25 at Copper Creek Golf Club in Pleasant Hill, Iowa.
