Flood Warnings are in effect at this time. A number of areas are affected. Please, check your area via the National Weather Service – Des Moines Office.

As always, do NOT drive or walk through flood waters. Even an inch of water can sweep you away.

Flooding is happening, or will be happening, along many rivers and creeks in Polk and Story counties and will continue for the next few days. If you live in a flood prone area, please keep updated through your local officials.

Below is a partial list of street, trail, and park closings-

Des Moines:

Road Closures:

 Prospect Road from Hickman Road to Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway

Park and Trail Closures:

 Gray’s Lake Park
 Prospect Park
 Bill Riley Trail from Ashworth Pool to Water Works Park
 Walnut Creek Trail from North Valley Drive to Bill Riley Connector
 Gay Lea Wilson Trail from Colfax Street to Hubbell Avenue
 Kruidenier Trail to Fleur Drive
 Des Moines River Trail from SE 6th Street to Hartford Avenue
 Principal Riverwalk (West Side)
 John Pat Dorrian at MLK Jr. Parkway
 Neal Smith Trail from 6th Avenue to Euclid Avenue
 Trestle to Trestle Trail from the Inter-Urban Connector to Euclid Avenue

Johnston:

  • Closed – the Trestle to Trestle Bridge.
  • With the weather warming up, residents are eager to get out on the trails. The barricades along the trail near Merle Hay Road and I-80/35 are still in place due to the thin layer of mud over the trail. Beaver Creek is still causing back up. The Johnston Parks Department is keeping a watchful eye on this trail and will clean it once Beaver Creek has receded.

West Des Moines:

Due to water levels of the Raccoon River (and therefore Blue Heron Lake), the following are CLOSED at Raccoon River Park until further notice:

  • Fishing Pier
  • Blue Heron Lake Trail
  • Dog Park – Open, but muddy
  • The trail on the south side of Raccoon River Park is closed.
